India and Iceland have agreed to step up cooperation in the fields of earthquake prediction and early warning system, geothermal and hydrogen energy systems, fisheries and pharmaceuticals. Iceland will be opening its Embassy in New Delhi early next year.
The two countries reviewed their bilateral relations at a meeting held here late last week, the foreign office said today.
The Icelandic side at the consultations was led by Mr Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson, Permanent Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian side by Ms Shashi U. Tripathi, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs.
This was the first round of Consultations between the two Foreign Ministries following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding during the State Visit to Iceland by President A P J Abdul Kalam in May 2005.
During the Consultations, the two sides had a comprehensive review of bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of common concern. Both sides also reviewed the follow-up to Dr Kalam's State Visit to Iceland.
The visiting dignitary called on Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.
The Icelandic side also met Commerce Secretary S N Menon and discussed issues of economic and commercial cooperation. The Indian side invited Iceland to look at the investment opportunities in India.
India and Iceland enjoy friendly relations, which have received a fresh impetus with Hon'ble President's State Visit.
