Bangladesh gears up preparations for SAARC summit2005-10-17 Security teams of some member countries are inspecting venues for the SAARC summit here next month as host Bangladesh stepped up preparations for the twice-postponed regional meet.Officials here said preparations were geared up for the November 12-13 summit after Pakistan confirmed it would take part despite the massive earthquake which killed over 50,000 people in the country. In Islamabad, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Pakistan has confirmed participation in the regional summit despite the tragic earthquake. The 13th SAARC summit, originally scheduled for January this year, had to be postponed twice-- first due to the Asian tsunami disaster and later because of security concerns in the region following a bomb blast in Bangladesh and the power grab by Nepal's King Gyanendra. Security teams from some member countries are already here to assess measures taken for the summit. Teams from India and Maldives are expected to arrive today, sources said. Officials said foolproof security would be in place for the November 12-13 summit and six sub-committees were working on it around-the-clock. Some 600 officials and journalists are expected to be in Dhaka for the meet. Bangladesh will deploy 20,000 troops for ensuring security of the meet. SAARC groups India, Bangladeh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Sponsored Links
