Harkat ul Jihad Al-Islami banned in Bangladesh2005-10-17 Bangladesh on Monday banned the Islamic militant group Harkatul Jihad Al-Islami as a terrorist organisation, in the third such proscription this year, days after its top leader was arrested.A Home Ministry statement said all activities of the Harkatul Jihad Al-Islami has been banned, describing it as a self-confessed terrorist organisation. "The government has banned all activities of Harkatul Jihad-al-Islami on the basis of available information," the statement said. "It is a self-confessed terrorist organisation. Its activities are very sensitive and it has been identified as a terrorist organisation," it said. The ban showed the "government's firm stand against terror activities," it added. The ban came after the October 1 arrest of Mufty Hannan, one of Jihad Al-Islami's top leaders, who is being quizzed by security agencies. Two other groups, the Jamatul Mujahedin Bangladesh and Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, were similarly banned in February. The government has blamed the August 17 serial bomb blasts, which killed four people, on Jamaat-ul-Mujahedin. Nearly 450 suspects, mostly members of the group, had been arrested in connection with the blasts. The arrests came after leaflets were found in most bomb sites containing calls purpotedly by Jamaat-ul-Mujahedin for introduction of Islamic rule in Bangladesh. In another bomb blast, two more people were killed and 10 injured in lower courts in three district towns this month. Sponsored Links
