Kochi: The Navy will acquire 27 new ships in five years, said Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash.
This will include six submarines and an aircraft carrier being built at the Cochin Shipyard.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the commissioning ceremony of the first UAV Squadron of the Indian Navy at Kochi on Friday.
"We will have another 32 ships in 10 to 15 years," he said. While acquiring new ships the Navy will give priority to indigenously built ships, he said. He said that the containers carrying explosives to Afghanistan going missing was a serious security matter.
"We have recovered four of the six containers," he said. Protection of the exclusive economic zone is the responsibility of the Coast Guard. But the Navy is ready to assist with the security of the economic zone, he said.
The maritime security threat is increasing day by day and more vigilance is required. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle will equip us with the ability to combat threats, the Naval Chief said.
