Indian Army to upgrade OSA-AK system

2006-01-08 Panchkula The Indian Army is going ahead with the upgradation of the OSA-AK system even as the delay in the development of the Trishul Missile System continues.

The Trishul Missile System is supposed to replace the OSA-AK system. Russian-made OSA-AK is a 15 km range anti-aircraft missile system, which is already in the arsenal of the Indian Air Force.

An Army official said the upgradation is being done with assistance from Polland in a deal worth hundred million dollars. Already, about 50 systems have been upgraded. The system is being upgraded with new tracking and surveillance capability. This comes with the addition of a new radar and other electronic equipment, which includes computerised fire control system. An Indian Army official said this would greatly improve the efficacy of the system.

The Army, in order to fulfill its short-range air defence cover, also recently inducted the Strela System. These missiles are mounted on a tracked vehicle. This makes the system highly mobile, which gives the decisive edge to the forces, an Army official said. Russian-made Strela are used for providing air defence cover to rapidly advancing formations.
