Surface-to-air missile Akash testfired from ITR2006-01-30 Balasore: The surface-to-air missile ''Akash'' was today testfired successfully for the second time during the last three days from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on sea, about 15 km from here. The indigenously-built, multi-target, medium-range missile having a range of 25 km, was testfired at 1210 hours. Earlier on January 28 last, the missile was testfired twice from the ITR and it met all the objectives set for the exercise. ''The objectives of the test were to demonstrate simultaneous intercept capability of the Akash weapon system against aerial targets flying at 550 kmph and all objectives set for the test have been achieved, ITR sources said. Akash is considered as one of the five missiles currently under various stages of development by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO). The 650 kg missile has the capacity to carry a 50 kg payload and uses the integrated two-stage ramjet propulsion technology. Akash, having undergone several flight tests earlier, is understood to be close to the user's trial stage. ITR sources said prior to the testfire of the missile, Pilotless Target Aircraft (PTA) was test flown from the ITR and the object dropped from the unmanned vehicle was targeted by the Akash missile. The full complement of ground system consisting of surveillance radars, control centres, multifunction phased array weapon control radar (Rajendra) and mobile launchers were included in the test configuration, the sources said.
