Two die in Chhattisgarh maoist attack

Jashpur: Communist Party of India (Maoist) cadres today attacked a police outpost here in Chhattisgarh, bordering Jharkhand, killing two policemen and injuring 12 others.

Preliminary reports said a group of armed naxalites stormed into the police outpost around 0300 hours and killed two security personnel on the spot while twelve others sustained injuries, including eight seriously.

Reports said naxalites had also looted weapons from the police outpost before fleeing to the nearby forests.

They were reportedly engaged by the Special Armed Force (SAF) in a gun battle.

According to police in the neighbouring Raigarh district, senior civil and police authorities were on their way to the village from Jashpur and additional police force had been rushed to the area to carryout combing operation to flush out the naxalites.

However, the detailed information about the incident was not immediately availbale due to some major fault in the telecommunication system in tribal Jashpur district.

All the injured security personnel were rushed to the Jashpur district hospital while the seriously wounded were being referred to the State Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) at Bilaspur.

Police in neighbouring Jharkhand have also been alerted about the possible movement of extremists.

Communist Party of India (Maoist) cadres have their presence in 11 out of 16 districts in Chhattisgarh. However, they are active in Sarguja region, bordering Jharkhand, and in Bastar neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
