Under pressure from the US and the European Union, China has agreed to a week's visit of the Dalai Lama to Tibet, and while it won't finalise the dates yet for security reasons, this could be in end-July.

The Dalai Lama who fled Tibet to India in 1959 with the Chinese occupation has been negotiating this visit for three years with Chinese-sponsored mediators, but China says while spelling out his future vision for Tibet, he must give up independence.

Diplomats said the Dalai Lama is willing for this, but wants maximum autonomy for Tibet in return and end to Chinese rule of the region from Beijing, and much would depend on the give-and-take before and during the visit, if it takes place.
