The Indian Air Force (IAF) is keeping a close watch on the security scenario in southern India, as it is near to Sri Lanka, following acquisition of some air power by LTTE.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Air Marshal Y Rane, Air Officer Commanding, Southern Air Command, said: "We are very much aware of the fact. At present, it was little or no threat. But we cannot take chances. We are closely monitoring the development."

"The moment we realise it is a threat to us, we will gear up fully to meet the situation. We are keeping an eye, monitoring and keeping the Air Headquarters informed."

Besides closely monitoring its own radars, the IAF was also sharing information with civil aviation authorities. Going by the information available, the LTTE would not be able to sustain whatever aerial capability it had acquired, Rane added.

Sharing of information and infrastructure between Air Force and Civil Aviation had been stepped up since both use the same air passage and, also, have the same security concerns.
