The army will soon introduce an entry-level personality test for aspiring personnel to eliminate candidates with negative traits in a measure aimed at cutting down the number of suicides and fratricides in the force.

"Personal problems are one of the major causes for a jawan to commit such (fratricide and suicide) an act. We will, by introducing a selection system for personnel below officer ranks (PBORs) to assess personality, filter out candidates with negative traits," DRDO chief controller (research and development) Dr W Selvamurthy said here today, on the sidelines of a life sciences cluster conference.

Till now only officers were subject to personality evaluation tests and interviews at the time of their selection into the services.

The DRDO scientist said the government was trying to involve district-level panchayat bodies also to look into the problems of families of jawans while they are deployed away from home.

"We are trying to involve the Zila Parishads (District Boards), which are there in almost every state, to look into the problems being faced by families of the jawans," he said.

Dr Selvamurthy said the government had implemented some of the recommendations made by DRDO in the armed forces and they have helped in bringing down the number of cases of suicides and fratricides there.

"On the basis of DRDO studies, government has implemented some of our recommendations in the services, which have reduced fratricide to a minimum and suicides have started showing a downward trend," he said.
