Iran today took serious exception to the statement of US Under-Secretary of State Nicholas Burns on Iran during his recent India visit, and said it was against "diplomatic conduct."
"Attacking a third country in the host country is not only against the established norms of diplomatic conduct, but also shows a constant disregard to these practices," the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran said, referring to the remarks he had made about Iran at a press conference here on October 21.
Regarding the claim about the support of Iran to terrorism, an embassy statement said the real reason behind terrorism was the wrong foreign policy of the United States which, for more than 50 years, supported unpopular regimes, toppled governments like that of Dr Mosaddegh and prevented the establishmetn of democracy and popular governments and ultimately helped in formation of radical thoughts.
On his remarks about the nuclear programme of Iran, the embassy said there was no proof of deviation of Iran from the path of the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This had been repeatedly stated in international for a and the report of the IAEA also had pointed out the same.
"On the other hand, some countries which are members of the NPT and have large stocks of nuclear weapons in their possession, have, in contravention of the NPT, not only not reduced their nuclear stockpile, but intend to increase the same," it said.
However, the statement hoped that the next meeting of the IAEA, distancing itself from political pressure, would be successful in performing its actual duties and preventing creation of a new crisis in the region. In this context, it was pointed out that several positive steps had recently been undertaken.
Reiterating Washington's serious concern over Iran's nuclear programme, Mr Burns had said Iran had been isolated and was now standing alone. It should come to the negotiating table, seek a diplomatic solution to the issue and try to seek a resolution by peaceful means.
"We are concerned about the behaviour of the government of Iran. No single country wants to see Iran nuclear. The only country standing with it is Venezuela. Iran should come back to negotiations, seek a diplomatic solution and resolve the issue by peaceful means. The best thing to move forward through negotiations," Mr Burns had added.
